MMAP Research
Classroom-based research focuses on finding the most effective combination of materials, teaching practices and activity structures for connecting middle-school students to mathematics. Design and research cycles are complementary and intersecting, allowing us to modify the materials continuously in response to how they are received and used by teachers and students. We conduct on-going observations, interview teachers and students, and videotape students using materials. Through analyzing patterns of interactions in MMAP classrooms, we are addresing the following research questions:
- What are the patterns of communications in the applications-based classroom? How can materials support students' using mathematics as a resource for communication, explanation and argumentation?
- How do we validly assess students' use of mathematics in the context of projects and other design activities?
- What teaching practices best support student learning in math classrooms, and what kind of support do teachers need in developing and using those practices?
