- Application
Units
support six to eight weeks of classroom time and require the use of
specially created MMAP design software. The application units plunge
students into an extended role-play as employees involved in a real-world
problem: creating codes, designing floor plans, making maps, or building
population models.
- Extensions
are two-to-three week units that build directly on the mathematical
insights and skills students develop within the major application
units. These materials serve to introduce students to the standard
mathematical notations associated with concepts such as proportion,
help them develop specific skills such as manipulating algebraic expressions,
and deepen their conceptual understanding of central mathematical
ideas such as function.
- Investigations
are one-to-two week explorations that introduce mathematical concepts
either from a pure mathematics point of view or within fanciful contexts.
In these mini-units, students can learn geometric vocabulary in the
context of quilting or methods of proof while exploring relationships
between even and odd integers. Mathematics concepts, common notations
and vocabulary are emphasized, along with mathematical practices such
as making conjectures, coming up with counter examples and writing
proofs.
- MMAP software
is a unique feature of the materials. The software environments are
interactional and mathematical resources for the group based project,
and are the environment for the design work and generation of math
opportunities and data for analysis. The technology is meant to meet
the learning needs of students who have been under-served by traditional
approaches to school math.
